It is great to see the Government of India finally taking steps to ban 27 harmful pesticides. These pesticides are banned in much of the developed world.
Indians suffer an enormous disease burden because of the unsafe pesticides and their indiscriminate use by a farming community that does not comply with rational use guidelines.
The government must not entertain the pesticide industry’s plea to reverse the ban. The writing on the wall has been around for a long time . If it was illegal already in the EU, it was just a matter of time for it to be banned in India as well.
India must make food safer for its people, and banning harmful pesticides is an excellent first step.
