This article on NDTV highlights an important food safety issue, vitamin D deficiency.
The article also talks about foods that are rich in vitamin D. Unfortunately, apart from milk and egg yolk, none of the others are consumed on a large scale in India. While egg yolk contains only a fraction of the RDA of vitamin D, milk is only a good source of Vitamin D when it is fortified (the article acknowledges this).
It is not possible for the vast majority of Indians to reach vitamin D sufficiency without supplementation. Therefore, the government must adopt the suggestion in this article and work with private industry to fortify commonly consumed food like milk.
