There is a widespread superstitious belief amongst Hindus that the waters of the Ganga have some miraculous property that cause it to “clean itself”, and therefore is not rendered harmful for drinking or bathing as a result of pollution.

This is bunkum! The government must do its duty to warn citizens, especially unsuspecting and superstitious pilgrims to our holy cities on the banks of the Ganga.

These pilgrims must be warned against ingesting the water, or even taking a bath in the Ganga, and if they do take a dip, then to immediately shower with clean water.

Here is our own government’s report on this issue, which clearly states that the water in the Ganga in almost every place is neither fit for drinking nor for bathing: – https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/ganga-river-water-unfit-for-direct-drinking-bathing-cpcb/articleshow/69573401.cms
