It appears that the Ganga only looks cleaner, but is not actually much cleaner during the lockdown. Industrial waste discolors the water, but domestic sewage is the major pollutant, and it has not come down at all.
Many of the posts on social media hailing the now “clean” Ganga use photoshopped fake images. The truth is different.
Like India’s air, the Ganga and most other Indian rivers are amongst the most polluted in the world. The polluted waters of our rivers are a significant source of disease amongst the population.
The Government of India has much to do to make our rivers clean.
