The revival of nitrogen fixing bacteria using gene editing methods is great news.

We can now expect more innovation in this area, and new, more effective, genetically modified nitrogen fixing bacteria which will eventually make the application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer unnecessary.

I expect genetically engineered organisms (viruses, phages, bacteria, plants, aquatic animals and other animals) to create great leaps for humanity. Reducing disease and pollution, making our food and water safer, and cleaning up the environmental damage we have inflicted on the planet for the last couple of centuries.

It is becoming easier than ever to create genetically modified organisms. While applications like these are beneficial and benign, it is scary to contemplate malicious use of this technology.
