Jamun (Black plum) or Syzygium cumini L., is a a seasonal and perishable fruit, originally from India, but grown in many parts of the world. It is rich in glucosides which helps control blood sugar and is a great source of minerals, vitamins & anti-oxidants. It is also beneficial in Diarrhoea, stomach-disorders, Gingivitis, Pyorrhoea, Nausea etc.
The NCBI website says that jamun is rich in minerals and phytochemicals, and is acidic due to its high tannin content, it also has a high antioxidant potential with therapeutic effects (Sehwag and Das 2014).
Studies proving its anti-diabetic effects were successfully conducted by Helmstädter (2008) and Rekha et al. (2008) who observed considerable reduction in blood glucose level of induced diabetic rat on administration of feed containing jamun seed and pulp.
