Summary feedback
ITC forayed into the digestive biscuit segment with the launch of this product to take on its rivals Britannia and Parle.
The product claims to be added sugar free and maida (refined wheat flour) free.. However, the product delivers 497 calories per 100 grams and as it has 22.7 grams of fat (200 calories), the rest of it is coming from wheat flour, maize starch and corn flakes. I.e. 300 calories per 100 grams of biscuits comes from simple starches like the ones found in Maida.
The foodnetindia rating for this product :-
foodnetindia safety rating: 4-(On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
In India snacks like biscuits, are consumed in large quantities in every household which leads to piling up of calories and fat quickly. And when people eat large quantities believing these to be “health foods”, this becomes a problem and a potential food safety issue for people at the risk of lifestyle diseases.
This biscuit contains 300 calories of simple starches  per 100 gm pack, but as people tend to consume higher quantities of these biscuits thinking that they are healthy, they may end up being unsafe for diabetics and those who are trying to lose weight.
We recommend that this product must only be consumed in very small quantities and that too not by the obese.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating: 5 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
We like the fact that this biscuit is added sugar free and maida free but this product cannot be considered as a meal replacement choice as it is high in simple starches and calories, low in protein and micronutrient diversity; and should be eaten in small quantities only as a part of an otherwise wholesome meal plan; and that too only by the healthy.
Ingredients of concern in Sunfeast Farmlite Digestive Biscuits

Edible Vegetable Oil
This food product does not specify which edible vegetable oil has been used. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to avoid clearly stating what ingredients have been used.
Certain vegetable oils contain very large amounts of biologically active fats called Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which could be harmful in excess. Excess polyunsaturated fats may react with oxygen and oxidised Omega-6 fats can damage body functions and perhaps even vital structures like DNA. In addition, consumers need clear information about the type of vegetable oil used, so that they can take action to maintain a healthy balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acid consumption.
Permitted Natural Colour: IN 150(d) Sulphite Ammonia Caramel
Caramel color is one of the oldest and most widely used food colorings, and is found in many commercially produced foods and beverages. Caramel color is widely approved for use in food globally but application and use level restrictions vary by country.
Side effects are manifested from the use of IN150d, where intestinal problems may occur after ingestion of large amounts. Due to the complex nature of the mixtures, toxicology tests are still being carried out.
Caramel coloring may be derived from a variety of source products that are themselves common allergens. As such, persons with known sensitivities or allergies to food products are advised to avoid foods including generic caramel coloring or first determine the source for the caramel coloring before consuming the food.
Added Flavours: Natural and Natural Flavouring Substances (Butter), Nature Identical Flavouring Substances (Creamy, Butter), Artificial Flavouring Substances (Milk, Vanilla)
This food product does not specify which flavours or flavouring substances have been used. The flavours should be specified as some of them have serious side effects and may not be suitable for infants, pregnant women or people who are allergic. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to avoid clearly stating what ingredients have been used.
Other ingredients that are in the product but not a major source of concern in our opinion are:

  • Wheat Products: Whole Wheat Flour, Wheat Bran, Wheat Fibre
  • Polyol (IN 965)
  • Raising Agents: IN 503(ii), Baking Powder
  • Maize Starch
  • Milk Solids
  • Corn flakes
  • Emulsifiers: IN 471, IN 472(e)
  • Acidity Regulator: IN 296
  • Cinnamon Powder
