Fruit juice is often thought to be healthy because of the word ‘Fruit, but in reality many fruit juices are loaded with sugar and contain as much or more sugar than a carbonated beverage. In addition, as the sugar is often fructose, it is far more harmful than sucrose, which is the sugar often found in carbonated drinks in India.
Real Fruit Power Litchi is very sugary with total sugar of 24 gm per 200 ml of the drink. It is not recommended even for very healthy people except in very small quantities because of low nutritional value and high sugar content. It must be completely avoided by diabetics and by obese people as it may be unsafe for them.
The foodnetindia rating for this product:-
foodnetindia safety rating: 2 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
The product is too sugary and not recommended for those who want to lead a healthy lifestyle. In addition, most of the sugar will be fructose, which, unlike glucose, is a metabolic poison that effects the liver in a similar manner as alcohol. This may be had only in very small quantities even by the healthy.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating: 2 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
Real Litchi is not ‘juice’ as it is reconstituted from concentrate and is not 100% fruit juice. It cannot be considered a good and safe source of nutrition because of its excessive sugar content and cannot substitute whole food or fruit.
Ingredients of concern in Real Litchi
Added Flavour: Nature Identical Flavouring Substances
Real Litchi contains total sugar 24 gm sugar per 100 ml, this is an excessive amount. The food product also does not specify which sugar has been used. This is important because different sugars have different metabolic effects. For example, Sucrose (Cane Sugar) is very different from Fructose (Fruit Sugar). Some foods use high fructose corn syrup which may be harmful in much lower quantities than sucrose. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to not clearly state what ingredients have been used.
Added Flavours: Nature Identical Flavouring Substances
This food product does not specify which flavours or flavouring substances have been used. The flavours should be specified as some of them have serious side effects and may not be suitable for infants, pregnant women or people who are allergic. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to avoid clearly stating what ingredients have been used.
By not specifying what these flavours and substances are, we are forced to consider what they are hiding and why would they be so reluctant to mention what they have used in the food product!
By this behaviour, these manufacturers expose people to possible allergens or toxins that could be avoided if consumers knew what they were.
Other ingredients that are in the product but not a major source of concern in our opinion are:
Litchi Pulp (20.80%)
Litchi Pulp Concentrate (1.17%),
Stabilizer (INS 440),
Acidity Regulator (INS 296)
Antioxidant (INS 300)
