Summary feedback
Quaker Oats calls itself the “World’s No. 1 Oats brand”, it has been around for over a century.
Quaker Oats Kesar flavour with Kishmish is made from wholegrain Oats which is high in fibre (compared to some other grains) at 4 gm per 40 gm serving.
Many Indians have adopted oats as their preferred breakfast option due to the perceived health benefits of it. Our advice to them is to always include lots of veggies and protein options along with oats as oats, being a grain, is not a good source of complete nutrition. It consists of mostly starch (simple carbohydrates). In addition, we ask that people avoid adding additional sugar to the oats as it will be an unhealthy practice for most people.
The foodnetindia rating for this product :-
foodnetindia safety rating: 3 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
Quaker Oats Kesar flavour with Kishmish is made from whole grains of oats. Eating grain like oats in large quantities in a meal results in a starch heavy, high glycemic load meal which could be a trigger for obesity and resultant lifestyle diseases. A single serving of 40 gm has 150 Kcal, mostly from starch.
Indians naturally have a sweet tooth and so love to add sugar to oats as well. Doing so will not only make it unhealthy and sugary, but also defeats the purpose of eating oats.
In addition, a meal consisting only of oats and some milk is neither wholesome nor complete. We recommend lots of vegetables and sufficient protein to be added to the meal.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating: 4 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
Some Indians have adopted oats as their preferred breakfast option due to the perceived health benefits of it. Oats are a grain with predominantly carbohydrate content, and a very small quantity of protein. Oats are a good source of dietary fibre when compared to other grains, and they also contain soluble fibre which may help in cholesterol control. However, being a grain, along with the fibre, it delivers a significant amount of simple carbohydrates and there is increasing evidence that carbohydrates are the primary driver of cholesterol imbalances. There are other food sources of soluble and insoluble fibre which are better options for this purpose as compared to oats, being low on starch.
Eating oats in small quantities as a part of an otherwise wholesome and nutritious diet is good for health, but like most grain and starchy foods, if eaten in large quantities it can become a worrisome cause of obesity and lifestyle disease.
Ingredients in Quaker Oats Kesar flavour with Kishmish which are a concern:

Sugar
This food product does not specify which sugar has been used. This is important because different sugars have different metabolic effects. For example, Sucrose (Cane Sugar) is very different from Fructose (Fruit Sugar). Some foods use high fructose corn syrup which may be harmful in much lower quantities than sucrose.  We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to not clearly state what ingredients have been used.
Permitted natural colour
We believe that it is irresponsible for a brand to not write the chemical names and quantities of added flavouring substances or colours. In this case, the brand fails to mention the names or quantities of the colours added.
Added Flavour
This food product does not specify which flavours or flavouring substances have been used. The flavours should be specified as some of them have serious side effects and may not be suitable for infants, pregnant women or people who are allergic. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to avoid clearly stating what ingredients have been used.
By not specifying what these flavours and substances are, we are forced to consider what they are hiding and why would they be so reluctant to mention what they have used in the food product!
By this behaviour, these manufacturers expose people to possible allergens or toxins that could be avoided if consumers knew what they were.
