Uncle Chipps Spicy Treat contains ingredients like potato, edible vegetable oil- palmolein and rice bran oil, milk solids, spices and condiments (tamarind powder, onion powder, cumin powder, black pepper powder, garlic powder, turmeric powder, large cardamom powder, ginger powder), salt, black salt, sugar, citric acid- 330.
The product contains a high amount of salt at 1080 mg sodium or 2.7 gm salt per 100 GMs, which is very high. High sodium diets have been known to be the cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. The recommended daily intake of salt is between 1-3 grams. The product also contains a high amount of fat at 35 gm per 100 gm pack. This is an HFSS (High Fat, Salt or Sugar) product which is not recommended for children and for most adults.
It contains palm oil as one of its ingredients, palmolein oil is generally a safe oil as unlike most other vegetable oils, palmolein is primarily saturated fat. It does not have too much PUFA, which can get oxidized under heat and is often rendered toxic.
However, last year, the safety authority delivered a scientific report that current levels of glycerol-based process contaminants found in palm oil are a “potential health concern.” Animal studies have identified these contaminants, which are formed when vegetable oils are heated to high temperatures and then refined, as both genotoxic (damaging to DNA) and carcinogenic (causing cancer). Of all vegetable oils, palm oil was found to have the highest levels of these contaminants. At high levels of exposure, these contaminants are a health hazard for all age groups, the authority concluded, expressing particular concern for infants, toddlers and children under the age of 10.
The foodnetindia rating for this product :-
foodnetindia safety rating: 2 -(On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
This is a starchy HFSS food and such foods are not considered safe for most people except in very small quantity and occasional consumption.
It contains edible vegetable oil- rice bran oil. Certain edible vegetable oils contain very large amounts of biologically active fats called Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which could be harmful in excess.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating: 2 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
The main component of this product is potato which is of a starchy base, which is then deep fried in vegetable oil. The macro or micronutrient profile of this food is fairly one dimensional and devoid of nutritive value expected from a wholesome meal. It contains an Omega 6 rich oil which creates dietary balance problems of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.
This food cannot be endorsed as part of a healthy diet and so we recommend that it is best avoided or eaten in very small quantities as a part of an otherwise wholesome and nutritious diet.
