Summary feedback
Nestle Maggi Hot & Sweet Tomato Chilli Sauce is a popular table condiment used in India.
Indians love to use tomato sauces liberally with most meals that they consume, but this product contains a high amount of sugar at 37.4 gm per 100 gm pack and a high amount of salt at 2.5 gm (1020 mg sodium) . Such high sugar and salt consumption is detrimental to the health of adults and kids alike.
The product label mentions 3.4 grams of sugar as 4% of GDA (why don’t they use RDA?). If people are fooled by this into thinking that the RDA for sugar is more than 80 grams a day because of this misleading nomenclature, they are sadly mistaken. BEWARE that this is WRONG. RDA for sugar is only 25 grams for an adult! We think this misleading labelling is irresponsible of Nestle and they must change this to RDA.
The foodnetindia rating for this product :-
foodnetindia safety rating : 3– (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
The product has a high amount of sugar at 37.4 gm per 100 grams of the product. This is high and such high sugar consumption can lead to diabetes and obesity for many people if eaten in large amounts.
It also contains a high salt content of 2.5 gm of salt per 100 gm sauce which is very high and can lead to hypertension and cardiac problems if consumed in large quantities frequently.
We specifically do not recommend this as a product suitable for children who end up getting a lot of sugar from other sources.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating : 3 -(On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
Tomato ketchup is used as an accompaniment and is not used as a meal replacement. Tomatoes have significant health benefits due to their lycopene content and more.
However, we are unable to give this product a high wholesomeness rating because of its sugar, salt and preservatives content.
Ingredients in Nestle Maggi Hot & Sweet Tomato Chilli Sauce which are a concern:
Sugar
Salt
Salt
This product contains 2.5 gm per 100 gm of the product. High sodium diets have been known to be the cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. The recommended daily intake of salt is between 1-3 grams.
Sugar
The product contains 37.4 gm sugar per 100 gm of the product. Sugar is a carbohydrate found naturally in a host of different foods from lactose in milk to the fructose in fruit and honey. In fact, we need some sugar in our diets to supply ready energy to fuel our muscles and keep our brains active. The problem is that many processed foods have added sugar which supplies energy in the form of calories – and very little else. This means our body has to draw on the nutrients from the rest of our diet to process it and this can affect our health, including our immunity – leaving us more prone to bugs and colds. A high intake of sugar causes our blood sugar levels to shoot up, giving us that feel-good ‘high’ followed by a crashing slump which leaves us tired, irritable and craving more sugary foods. It’s a vicious cycle that may be contributing to our weight problems as well as health concerns like diabetes and heart disease.
