Summary Feedback
Kellogg’s Cornflakes with Real Strawberry Puree contains corn grits 58%, sugar, beetroot extract, strawberry puree (2.5%), malt extract, iodized salt, vitamins, minerals and antioxidant (IN320)
The product has added sucrose content of 9.6 gm in 30 gm of the product which is high and unsuitable for diabetics and those with lifestyle diseases. Also people like to add more sugar to their breakfast cereal and by doing so they make it more sugary and unsafe for themselves. The serving size of 30 grams is also unrealistically low and most people will end up eating more.
With over 30% sugar, this product is suitable as a dessert and not as a meal replacement or as a main component of any meal. Such high sugar products must especially not be given as breakfast replacements to children.
It contains 0.3 gm salt (140 mg sodium) per 30 gm of the product. High sodium diets have been known to be the cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. The recommended daily intake of salt is between 1-3 grams.
The foodnetindia rating for this product :-
foodnetindia safety rating: 3 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
In India, breakfast cereals like these, are gaining popularity due to aggressive marketing and the perception among the masses that it is healthy and safe. But this product has high added sugar in it, in addition to natural sugars in fruit puree. We don’t believe that products with such high sugar belong in a healthy meal except as an occasional dessert.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating: 3 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
More than 30% of this product is sugar and this product is marketed including to children as a breakfast meal. We do not consider high sugar products like this as a suitable or wholesome breakfast replacement.
Ingredients in Kellogg’s Cornflakes with Real Strawberry Puree which are a concern:
- Sugar
- Salt
Sugar
The product contains sucrose in it, we need some sugar in our diets to supply ready energy to fuel our muscles and keep our brains active. The problem is that many processed foods have added sugar which supplies energy in the form of calories – and very little else. This means our body has to draw on the nutrients from the rest of our diet to process it and this can affect our health, including our immunity – leaving us more prone to bugs and colds. A high intake of sugar causes our blood sugar levels to shoot up, giving us that feel-good ‘high’ followed by a crashing slump which leaves us tired, irritable and craving more sugary foods. It’s a vicious cycle that may be contributing to our weight problems as well as health concerns like diabetes and heart disease.
