Summary feedback
Kellogg’s Crunchy Granola Almonds and Cranberries are advertised as a meal replacement and a healthy breakfast.
With a high content of sugar and grain in the product, it is high on starch (more than 70 percent by weight is sugar and carbohydrates), which is not a very good thing for people who are obese or those with lifestyle disease.
The product has a very high sugar (sucrose) content of 7.2 gm per 40 gm which we feel is neither warranted nor required as it already contains 24% fruit & berries in it. Also people like to add more sugar to their breakfast cereal and by doing so they make it more sugary and unsafe for themselves.
The foodnetindia rating for this product :-
foodnetindia safety rating: 4 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
Granola is gaining popularity as a breakfast and healthy snack option due to aggressive marketing. But this product is high in added sugar and people usually add even more sugar when they consume it.
This one contains added sugar of 7.2 gm per 40 gm serving which is very high. If you want to have Granola for breakfast then choose the one that has no added sugar and uses dry fruit instead of candied ones.
If you are watching sugars or carbs, then limit your portions of this product or just avoid it.
The product contains Palmolein which oil is generally a safe oil as unlike most other vegetable oils, palmolein is primarily saturated fat. It does not have too much PUFA, which can get oxidized under heat and is often rendered toxic.
However, last year, the safety authority delivered a scientific report that current levels of glycerol-based process contaminants found in palm oil are a “potential health concern.” Animal studies have identified these contaminants, which are formed when vegetable oils are heated to high temperatures and then refined, as both genotoxic (damaging to DNA) and carcinogenic (causing cancer). Of all vegetable oils, palm oil was found to have the highest levels of these contaminants. At high levels of exposure, these contaminants are a health hazard for all age groups, the authority concluded, expressing particular concern for infants, toddlers and children under the age of 10.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating: 4 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
We would have considered the product wholesome and nutritious with its whole grains and 24% fruit and nuts. However, we don’t like the fact that it has a high sugar content of 7.2 gm per 40 gm which is not recommended for obese people and those with lifestyle diseases. Even healthy people must not consume it often as a breakfast or meal replacement.
Ingredients in Kellogg’s Crunchy Granola Almonds and Cranberrie which are a concern:
- Sugar
- Liquid Glucose
- Salt
- Added flavours(Nature identical and Artificial Cream flavouring substances)
Sugar
This food product contains 7.2 gm per 40 gm, sugar is a carbohydrate found naturally in a host of different foods from lactose in milk to the fructose in fruit and honey. In fact, we need some sugar in our diets to supply ready energy to fuel our muscles and keep our brains active. The problem is that many processed foods have added sugar which supplies energy in the form of calories – and very little else. This means our body has to draw on the nutrients from the rest of our diet to process it and this can affect our health, including our immunity – leaving us more prone to bugs and colds. A high intake of sugar causes our blood sugar levels to shoot up, giving us that feel-good ‘high’ followed by a crashing slump which leaves us tired, irritable and craving more sugary foods. It’s a vicious cycle that may be contributing to our weight problems as well as health concerns like diabetes and heart disease.
Liquid Glucose
Glucose syrup, also known as confectioner’s glucose, is a syrup made from the hydrolisis of starch. Glucose is a sugar.
Salt
The product contains 0.3 gm salt per 40 gm cup which is high considering that this is a sweet product and not savoury and people will be getting their daily salt allowance from meals eaten throughout the day, the WHO recommends a daily salt intake of 1-3 gm per day to lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
