Summary feedback
Gulab Jamun is a popular North Indian dessert (Mithaee). As with all Indian mithais, it is very sugary which makes it unhealthy for most people, especially diabetics and people at risk of heart disease.
Bambino Gulab Jamun mix has 900 mg of sodium which is equivalent to almost 2 gm of salt which is extremely high and the amount of salt one would generally consume during the course of the day.
The Bambino Gulab Jamun mix does not contain sugar but as it’s consumption will be with added sugar, we will rate it in the final form.
The Bambino Gulab Jamun mix contains Edible Vegetable Fat in it which usually is way for brands to say hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, Hydrogenated fats are a source of trans fatty acids or “trans fats”, which are harmful to health. Even though this product claims to be trans fat free but we would still like our readers to know that partially hydrogenated fats have trans fats. Trans fats increase the likelihood of heart disease, stroke, cancer and many other ailments.
The foodnetindia Safety rating for this product:-
foodnetindia safety rating: 2 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
This mix does not contain sugar but when it is being prepared people will add high amounts of sugar to it as it is a mithai. That will make this preparation strictly not recommended for diabetics and those who are obese. Even healthy people must know that their entire day’s sugar allowance is completed with only one serving of this product. In addition, it has vegetable fat which we take to mean hydrogenated oils, a source of harmful transfats.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating: 3 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
Bambino Gulab Jamun mix contains healthy and nutritious Milk powder which is good for health but it cannot be considered as healthy food and is not a meal replacement, this is primarily as it is a sweet mithai and people tend to add high amounts of sugar to it while preparing it.
Ingredients of concern in Bambino Gulab Jamun
- Edible Vegetable Fat
- Malic acid IN 296
Edible Vegetable Fat
Often brands tend to obscure the fact that they have used hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils by using the term “edible vegetable fat”. Hydrogenated fats are a source of trans fatty acids or “transfats”, which are harmful to health. Even though this product claims to be transfat free but we would still like our readers to know that partially hydrogenated fats have trans fats. Trans fats increase the likelihood of heart disease, stroke, cancer and many other ailments.
This food product does not specify which edible vegetable fat has been used. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to avoid clearly stating what ingredients have been used.
A vegetable oil is a triglyceride extracted from a plant. Such oils have been part of human culture for millennia. The term “vegetable oil” can be narrowly defined as referring only to plant oils that are liquid at room temperature, or broadly defined without regard to a substance’s state of matter at a given temperature. For this reason, vegetable oils that are solid at room temperature are sometimes called vegetable fats.
Malic Acid IN 296
It is a natural acid present in most fruits and many vegetables. Commercially made by chemical synthesis. It is part of the metabolic pathway of every living cell. Used as acid, flavour compound and colour stabilizer in apple and grapejuice. High concentrations are not permitted in infant food, as small children lack the capacity to metabolise large amounts of malic acid.
Other ingredients that are in the product but not a major source of concern in our opinion are:
- Refined wheat flour (60%)
- Skimmed Milk Powder
- Sodium Bicarbonate: E500
