Summary feedback
American Garden Peanut Butter Creamy is a popular sandwich spread especially among kids and working adults who are constantly on the go.
While reviewing this product we note that it has a rich addictive taste due to which consumers eat it in large quantities which is problematic because of the high omega 6 content in peanut oil and the widely existing lack of balance between omega 6 and omega 3 consumption amongst the population.
In addition, the product has hydrogenated vegetable oil which is a source of transfats and transfers are harmful for health and a cause of many diseases.
The foodnetindia rating for this product :-
foodnetindia safety rating : 3 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
Unlike natural, home-made peanut butter, American Garden Peanut Butter has added harmful hydrogenated vegetable oil which is a source of transfats and transfers are harmful.
Transfats are known to be responsible for a wide range of diseases. And unlike home made peanut butter that only contains roasted peanuts, American Garden Peanut Butter includes hydrogenated vegetable oil and also sugar.
People who are allergic to peanuts should not consume this food.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating : 4- (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
Peanuts are high in fibre, nutrient dense and a healthy wholesome food. Studies show that people including nuts in their diet lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
However the fact that the manufacturers of this product have used hydrogenated vegetable oil makes us give this product lower ratings.
Ingredients of concern in American Garden Peanut Butter Creamy
- Sugar
- Salt
- Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (rapseed, cottonseed and soyabean)
Sugar
American Garden Peanut Butter Creamy contains 3 gm sugar per 32 gm, and does not specify which sugar has been used. This is important because different sugars have different metabolic effects. For example, Sucrose (Cane Sugar) is very different from Fructose (Fruit Sugar). Some foods use high fructose corn syrup which may be harmful in much lower quantities than sucrose. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to not clearly state what ingredients have been used.
Excessive sugar consumption is linked to a wide variety of metabolic diseases.
Salt
The product contains 140 mg per 32 gm serving, High sodium diets have been known to be the cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. The recommended daily intake of salt is between 1-3 grams.
Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (rapeseed, cottonseed and soyabean)
Partially Hydrogenated and Hydrogenated fats are a source of trans fatty acids or “transfats”, which are harmful to health. Transfats increase the likelihood of heart disease, stroke, cancer and many other ailments.
Transfats are toxic and some cities like New York have banned them from use in restaurants.
Transfats have been shown to consistently be associated, in an intake-dependent way, with risk of coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death. They may also be responsible for alzheimer’s disease, cancer, liver disease and many more ailments
Other ingredients that are in the product but not a major source of concern in our opinion are:
Peanuts
Soy
