Summary feedback
Coca Cola Zero is for people who want to drink Coca Cola with zero sugar and zero calories.
Coke zero does not have calories, no sugar and no carbohydrates when compared to a regular can of Coca Cola but there are certain ingredients in Coke zero which, in our opinion, makes it potentially unsafe for consumption.
Coke Zero contains artificial sweeteners like Aspartame which some studies link to increase in appetite and therefore indirectly promotes obesity. In addition, there is a lot of controversy over the safety of aspartame, because of which companies like PepsiCo have already announced that they will stop using aspartame in products like Diet Pepsi.
The foodnetindia rating for this product :-
foodnetindia safety rating : 3-(On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unsafe to very safe)
A 354 ml can of Coke zero contains 34 mg of Caffeine which may not sound like a lot, but if you drink many cans a day, it can result in symptoms like shaking, dizziness, abnormal heart rate etc.
It contains phosphates which are released into the blood stream and interfere with the calcium in the body, drinking large amounts of it may draw out the calcium from the bones which may cause you to have brittle bones and also cause damage to your teeth.
Aspartame, the artificial sweetener used in Coke zero has been shown by some studies to cause obesity indirectly. It is a controversial food additive with many concerns raised about its safety. In addition, anyone with phenylketonuria disorder in which the body can’t process the amino acid phenylalanine must avoid aspartame.
foodnetindia wholesomeness rating : 1 – (On a scale of 1 to 10 from very unbalanced nutrition profile to excellent nutrition profile)
Coca Cola Zero does not contain any calories, fat, sugars, etc., and does not have any nutritional benefits. This is a huge concern for the youth, who may substitute Coca Cola Zero for hydration or healthy beverages such as plain water or milk.

IN 951
Aspartame is an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener used as a sugar substitute in some foods and beverages. The function(s) performed by the food additive when used in cooking. In 1997, due to public concerns, the UK government introduced a new regulation obliging food makers who use sweeteners to state clearly next to the name of their product the phrase “with sweeteners”.
Aspartame breakdown products include phenylalanine, aspartame must be avoided by people with the genetic condition phenylketonuria.Aspartame has been the subject of several controversies since its initial approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
IN 950
Acesulfame potassium is an artificial sweetener. As with other artificial sweeteners, concern exists over the safety of acesulfame potassium. However, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its general use. Critics say acesulfame potassium has not been studied adequately and may be carcinogenic, although these claims have been dismissed by the FDA and equivalent authorities in the European Union.
Acesulfame K has been shown to stimulate dose-dependent insulin secretion in rats in lab tests.
Preservative IN 211
Sodium benzoate (IN 211) is a preservative and food additive. It is bacteriostatic and fungi static under acidic conditions. It is most widely used in acidic foods such as salad dressings (vinegar), carbonated drinks (carbonic acid), jams and fruit juices (citric acid), pickles (vinegar), and condiments.
Permitted Natural colour -150d
Artificial colour 150d is used to give the beverage its brown colour. It gets its characteristic brown colouring when processed with ammonia and sulphur to intensify the colour. It may contain ammonium compounds, which affect digestive system and stomach (gastrointestinal problems), liver, and cause hyperactivity. Caramel colour produced with ammonia may be associated with blood toxicity and has been linked to a reduction of white cells and lymphocyte count. A clarification is needed from the brand if an ammonia based process has been used and whether these reported health issues are relevant to it.
Added Flavours (Natural Flavouring Substances)
This food product does not specify which flavours or flavouring substances have been used. The flavours should be specified as some of them have serious side effects and may not be suitable for infants, pregnant women or people who are allergic. We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to avoid clearly stating what ingredients have been used.
By not specifying what these flavours and substances are, we are forced to consider what they are hiding and why would they be so reluctant to mention what they have used in the food product!
By this behaviour, these manufacturers expose people to possible allergens or toxins that could be avoided if consumers knew what they were.
Other ingredients that are in the product but not a major source of concern in our opinion are:
Carbonated Water
Caffeine
Acidity Regulator (338) and 331
