The cake contains eggs and butter which is nutritious but also contains a lot of ingredients which may not be good for health. High sugar quantity of 32 gm per 100 gm is a worrying factor as kids and adults both love these cakes and they are eaten in huge quantity without worrying about calorie intake and sugar intake.

Big brands like Britannia should avoid using poor ingredients like hydrogenated vegetable oils which contains trans-fats, as millions of Indians’ health are being affected by them.

Sugar

Britannia cake Butter blast contains 32 gm of sugar per 100 gm serving which is high. This food product does not specify which sugar has been used. This is also important because different sugars have different metabolic effects. For example, Sucrose (Cane Sugar) is very different from Fructose (Fruit Sugar). Some foods use high fructose corn syrup which may be harmful in much lower quantities than sucrose.  We believe that it is not responsible behaviour for a brand to not clearly state what ingredients have been used.

Edible vegetable oil/Hydrogenated vegetable oil

Partially Hydrogenated and Hydrogenated fats are a source of trans-fatty acids or “trans-fats”, which are harmful to health. Trans-fats increase the likelihood of heart disease, stroke, cancer and many other ailments.

Trans-fats are toxic and some cities like New York have banned them from use in restaurants.

Trans-fats have been shown to consistently be associated, in an intake-dependent way, with risk of coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death. They may also be responsible for alzheimers disease, cancer, liver disease and many more ailments.

Liquid Glucose

Glucose syrup, also known as confectioner’s glucose, is a syrup made from the hydrolysis of starch. Glucose is a sugar. Excessive sugar consumption is linked to a wide variety of metabolic diseases.

Sorbitols IN 420

Sorbitols are derived from glucose, either obtained from berries of the Sorbus aucuparia tree or synthesised. They are used in confectionary, dried fruit, pastries, low calorie foods, pharmaceutical syrups and ophthalmic preparations and is the seventh most widely used preservative in cosmetics. Sorbitols are not permitted in foods for infants and young children, as they can cause gastric disturbance.  Four pieces of low-joule chewing gum can make a child seriously ill. Not recommended for diabetics or people with fructose intolerance.

Aluminium sulphate IN 520

Aluminium sulphate is a natural mineral, from which the commercial product is purified. Aluminium sulphate is used to precipitate protein, for example during the beer brewing process. It also strengthens the structure of vegetables during processing. Found in Beer, pickled vegetables, proteins (deodorant, as anti-bacterial agent). Aluminium inhibits the uptake of B-vitamins. It may also influence liver function in high concentrations. Aluminium in food has been linked to early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Aluminium is a toxin and we do not recommend its use in food.
