Delhi the most polluted city on Earth!
Delhi has just earned the distinction of being the most polluted city on Earth as air quality has reached epically bad proportions. On November 8 2017, air pollution went up so much that air quality monitoring stations reported Air Quality Index of 999, which was way higher than the upper limit of the worst category, Hazardous. TATA Salt Lite says it is a refined, iodised and potassium enriched, low-sodium salt specially formulated to provide 15% lower sodium than regular salt. It is consumed by many Indians to keep a check on their blood pressure and weight.
It contains a food additive called Potassium ferrocyanide (E536) which is classified as a neutral salt and is used increasingly nowadays in iodised salt as an anti-caking agent. Though there should be no cause for concern at the low quantities used, adding acid to an aqueous solution of E536 releases toxic hydrogen cyanide gas. Although not mutagenic, it can cause irritation, if ingested, inhaled, or if it comes into contact with skin. It’s adverse effects increase with the increase of quantity and regularity with which it enters the body. It is toxic when consumed in large amounts and accumulates in the body. In Great Britain, the addition of this anti-caking agent to table salt is prohibited. Continue reading
