Kolkata and West Bengal have been reeling under the rotten meat scam, resulting in the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Eastern India, which has a 1000 members, asking its members to get all their meat/poultry supplies tested at a Gurgaon laboratory.
It has identified Interlek India Pvt Ltd, accredited by FSSAI, for the tests, which will include species identification, pathogenic and non-pathogenic micro-organisms tests. These testing is be voluntary and the association will bear the cost. This step is being taken to instill confidence in customers about the quality of food being served in the hotels and restaurants.
The tests would cost them about Rs 19,700 for every sample (2×500 gm). It is being done as people are scared about the quality of meat being served to them at hotels and restaurants in the city and have stopped stepping out for meals
