In a shocking disclosure especially for the multi-million dollar bottled water industry, 3 out of 10 packaged water samples across India have been found to be contaminated.
This was announced by Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, C R Chaudhary, in the Lok Sabha during question hour. He stated that the FSSAI had undertaken an exercise to test 743 samples in 2016-17. Out of these samples, a third, or 224 samples, were found to be flouting the safety standards set in India.
The FSSAI has filed cases against 131 manufacturers of the contaminated water packs, out of which 33 manufacturers were convicted and 40 paid penalties.
