The FSSAI’s third-party food safety audit of campus kitchens at 12 top central institutions of higher education has found them lacking in the food safety department.
Most of the institutions ranked lower in common parameters like cleaned utensils retaining food residue, rodent droppings around the kitchens, reheating of food several times, kitchen staff wearing shoes in the kitchen that are meant to be worn outside, choked bathrooms, and overflowing sinks where utensils are cleaned. For the first time ever, India’s food safety regulator, the Food Safety And Standard Authority of India (FSSAI), has introduced ‘+F’ logo for fortified staple food products such as rice, wheat, oil and milk which will help people to identify which food products are rich in nutrients.
This step was taken as a result of the National Family Health Survey, which concluded that almost 50% of women and children in India suffer from anemia, and buying fortified food products helps to increase nutrition levels. Continue reading
