FSSAI Bans Staple Pins in Tea Bags

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has banned the use of stapler pins in tea bags from January 1 2018, as it can be very unsafe for the people who may consume any loose staple pin with tea, and may cause serious health hazards.

At the moment tea bags are either stapled or knotted, and according to industry estimates, while the tea bag segment contributes only 3-4 per cent of total tea sales, the segment is growing at 50-60 per cent year.

It also orders the food safety commissioners to take strict action to prevent the use of staple pins and unsafe packaging materials by food companies and enforce the order strictly.
