FSSAI to Address Concerns on Health Supplements and Nutraceuticals

India’s food safety watchdog FSSAI will address the concerns raised by the industry on new standards for 8 categories of products, which include health supplements and nutraceuticals.

Mr. Pawan Agarwal, CEO of FSSAI, said that there were contentious issues considering the supplements and nutraceuticals and that consumers’ interest for any regulator is primary. On labeling, he added that there may not be too many issues, but that FSSAI was getting reports from the field that a large number of spurious products were available in the market.

He also said that “the challenge with the food supplements is that there is no robust framework for testing of food supplements products. There are also issues about good manufacturing practices around food supplements and nutraceuticals sectors,”
