India’s national airlines Air India was directed by the apex consumer commission to pay Rs One lakh as fine for serving unsafe stale food to a passenger aboard a Mumbai-New York flight. While dismissing the revision petition filed by the airline in 2015, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, said that “the nature of deficiency in service” could affect the health of several passengers.
Aspartame, an artificial low calorie sweetener, was approved by FDA in 1981 as a tabletop sweetener, and in chewing gum, cold breakfast cereals, and dry bases for certain foods. In 1983, FDA approved it for use in beverages and carbonated beverage syrup bases, and in 1996, FDA approved it for use as a “general purpose sweetener”. The Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of the World Health Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization, and the Scientific Committee on Food of the European Union (SCF) among others support the safety of aspartame.
